I run a number of search engines that I use to collect material for news postings and I notices that pocketnow doesn't seem to show up on them. What do we need to do to get a presence on Google at least?

Google is definitely spidering your site. Doing a site-specific search for GPS site:pocketnow.com shows a lot of hits.

My understanding is that Google ranks a site by seeing how many other sites reference it. I think it also ranks a site higher if the referencing sites themselves are highly ranked.

So, you need to get highly-ranked sites to reference you. Do a Google search on "Pocket PC" to see which sites are ranked highly, and find a way to get them to reference you. For example, Pocket PC Thoughts is ranked #3 after Microsoft and Pocket PC Magazine, and they have a logo button exchange program.
