Thanks to our friends at the FCC, we are all able to see some details on HP's best-kept secret-- the iPAQ h2200.

This seems like it may be the dream device for some. Is HP finally leaving behind the need for expansion sleeves?

Some of the 2200s have BlueTooth built-in. (That's why they have to file with the FCC.) They don't have WiFi built in though. You can, of course, use a CF WiFi card to do that.

Browsing through the user manual, I happened by a few other interesting items on the 2200 models.

The h2200 models have an interesting memory specification: 64MB SDRAM or greater and 32MB ROM or greater. They are indeed using the Cotulla (ARM4 core) processor, running at 200MHz or 400MHz. The Cotulla processor was the successor to the StrongARM and includes a number of enhancements for better performance with video and graphics processing.

Like the 545x models, the 2200s have a microphone input as well as stereo output. Like all current models, the 2200s have a removable rechargable battery. Unlike the 1900 models, the 2200 models also implement a full serial port as well at the USB port in the cradle connector. The 2200s also have the Nevo Universal Remote application/hardware that was built into the 39xx and 545x iPAQs.

The 2200 models that have built-in BlueTooth radios support the following profiles: Serial Port, LAN Access (client), Dial-Up Networking, Information Exchange, File Transfer, Print, and Personal Area Network.

I visited the FCC link you posted, and it seemed to be for the iPAQ 19xx. The photos shown were not the 2200, at least.

That depends on what you mean by "leaving behind the need for expansion sleeves".

If you mean will HP produce models that don't accept sleeves, the answer is that they already do -- the iPAQ 19xx series.

If you mean will HP stop producing models that accept sleeves, the answer to that is not yet -- the 5500 series will still accept sleeves.

Remember that the 2200 will supposedly be HP's mid-range iPAQ. The high-end will be filled by the 5500, which will still be sleeve-compatible.

I hope HP will continue to produce models that accept sleeves for a long time. I don't want to have to buy a new GPS receiver. :)
