Around fall to winter time, HP will be releasing an all new iPAQ with new features... most notably a built-in QWERTY keyboard.

"The HP iPaq 4000 series will have much the same features as the 5000 series currently such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth but instead of having the normal look at the bottom of the iPaq we'll see a thumbpad style keyboard. It seems more and more of the device makers are moving in this direction and there is much less emphasis on Graffiti. Indeed, Handspring said today they will not be supporting Graffiiti in the Treo 600."

Interesting, but everything else I've heard said the 4000 line was skipped because "4" was unlucky in some Asian cultures.

I've never quite understood that, as the 5450 has a four in it, but what do I know? :)

I have heard of it coming out but i am not sure if it is or not. Numbers being unlucky, that i am familiar with. I had some customers I was selling a phone to and they wanted to check their before to see how the numbers went together, I remember four being in there:)

4 in Chinese sound like "Dead".

I've heard the same explanation of why the 4000 series was skipped from several sources. It'll be interesting, therefore, to see whether this rumor bears any fruit.

HP numbering has always been hard to make any sense out of. In calculators, the 41c came out after the 65 and 67 and was better than either. That was followed later by the 22S, better again and eventually the 28g, and finally the 39g, better still.

In HPCs HP did the 95LX, 100LX, 200LX, 320LX, 360LX, 620, 660, 720, and 820. The 420, 430, 540, 560 and 525 were Palm-Sized PC and Pocket PCs.

The 2200 series is already filling the midrange between 5000 and 1900 series. Does HP need any more depth? If the 4000 series materializes, I guess they thought they did :)
