A new MSN Messenger Update (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/resources/msnmessenger/pocketpc.mspx) is finally available. Microsoft has been sending out nagging instant messages to users of older MSN Messenger clients for the past week or so. The messages were requesting that you install the latest update since the network will no longer support older clients as of Oct 15th. However, there were no updates available for Pocket PC versions of MSN Messenger until today.

Hmmm... that's funny. I just installed the update, logged onto MSN Messenger from the Pocket PC. AND STILL GOT THE NAGGING INSTANT MESSAGE FROM MICROSOFT!!! Did it tell me I need to do a soft reset? NO!!
That seemed to work though.
And it looks like desktop versions of MSN Messenger recognize the Pocket PC version as a mobile device now.
EDIT: Oh haha! There it is... the desktop installer tells you to do a soft reset after. It was underneath all my other windows. Oops.

Does anyone know if this applies in any way to Microsoft Research China's Portrait program? I don't use Messenger, at all, but occassionally use Portrait 2.1 for either text-based chat or VoIP. I've seen no updates lately to that software, but wonder if this security update applies, since both rely on a Passport account being active to function, and presumably (I think) both depend on the same routing to function. Anyone?

Strange, I think this happened after the update. I would log into BT to my cell. And I was able to use msn messenger. Now I cannot connect. BUT if I'm in the docking station, I can connect. any ideas?

Sorry, haven't a clue on your question. But I did sort of answer my own regarding Portrait and the new security measures at MSN. Turns out Portrait fails to load any of my contacts, where it used to take just about 10 seconds. After the update, MSN Messenger worked great (though I still don't like the limitation to text messaging, sometimes preferring VoIP, and the silly pop-up messages when I'm multi-tasking are an irritation). Portrait now just keeps trying to sign in, endlessly. The program is dead in the water, at least until MS Research China gets a new version done... if they can.
