NEC and ARM have announced that they are entering into a long-term collaboration to create new multiprocessor-based cores for mobile devices and other multimedia applications. The collaboration combines technologies from both companies and bring full-scale parallel processing to the hand-held world. Some Pocket PCs are already using multiple processors where one processor is primarily for graphics accelleration. The now-discontinued HP Jornada combined an ARM and TI OMAP processor to facilitate wireless connectivity. The NEC/ARM collaboration would combine multiple processor cores within a single chip to provide better performance, especially in media-rich applications.
One last thing: The first person who suggests that this collaboration between ARM and NEC be called "shoulder" gets a dope-slap. :)
