Shipments of PDAs (personal digital assistants) dropped 0.2 percent between July and September, compared with a year ago, according to the Gartner research firm. The reduction in sales is blamed on the "trendiness" of owning a PDA wearing off. However, HP not only bucked the trend, but doubled it's market share in the same time-frame. That's due to the variety of HP offerings as well as the number of those which fall in the middle- to low-cost segment.

According to Gartner, the expectation for the fourth quarter is flat at best. Normally sales increase in the fourth quarter due to holiday gift sales.
