Motorola has officially announced (http://www.motorola.com/mediacenter/news/detail/0,,3870_3245_23,00.html) the MPx100 Smartphone. As you can see, it's a candy bar phone with some interesting features.
Here is a list of those features from the PDF data sheet (http://www.motorola.com/mot/doc/1/1055_MotDoc.pdf):
* Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003
* 64MB Flash ROM
* Mini-SD card slot
* Tri-band technology with GPRS
* Integrated 1.3 mega-pixel camera, triple "super bright LED" flash, 3x zoom and self-portrait capability
* Pocket Outlook (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks & Unified Inbox)
* Pocket Internet Explorer
* ActiveSync synchronization
* MMS messaging features for sending pictures, animations, wallpaper, icons and more
* Downloading capabilities for adding on new games, musical ringtones, business applications and more
I'm not a fan of candy bar phones, but, if you are, this looks like a good one.
It will also come with a full set of optional accessories, including:
* A Bluetooth headset
* A Bluetooth GPS receiver (presumably with Smartphone software)
* A QWERTY keyboard
* A Wi-Fi adapter
The MPx100 should be available in the second half of 2004.
One thing that wasn't clear is how much available memory this will have. Here's what the data sheet said: "64MB Flash ROM and mini-SD card with up to 512MB removable memory for extra storage". That doesn't tell me how much Flash ROM is user-accessible or whether the MPx100 comes with a mini-SD card.
Another issue is whether the MPx100 will support standard SD cards. The above text doesn't sound like it, but the data sheet also said, "Use the SD card slot to save up to 512MB worth of music files, videos, games and other applications with a mini-SD card or a standard SD card."
That certainly sounds like it will support full-size SD, but then why mention mini-SD at all? There will be adapters to allow mini-SD cards to be used with standard SD slots, so, if the phone has an SD slot, mini-SD support would be assumed.
If this does have just a mini-SD slot, that would be annoying. If you've read some of my past comments, you know that I'm not a fan of new memory formats. A mini-SD slot might prevent me from using my existing SD cards. The one positive thing is that the mini-SD cards would work in a Pocket PC's standard SD slot with the adapter, so it's a better choice than some other memory format.
Finally, I wasn't sure if the camera had a digital or optical zoom. I'm guessing it's digital, because I don't recall having seen a camera phone with an optical zoom, but I can't be sure.
Does this look like the phone you've been waiting for? Share your thoughts in the discussion.
