federal district court has ruled that a patent held by E-Pass Technologies covers more than just credit card-sized handhelds, and therefore HP, maker of the iPAQ line of Pocket PCs, may owe E-Pass millions in licensing fees.

This company is also bringing a similar case against palmOne.

utterly insane ruling !!!

if PDA are considered credit card size by this judge, why don't he just go ahead and include laptops, desktops, servers, or any computing device in this world that can store protected credit card info for that matter.

No wonder companies like E-pass continue to pop up, it is the patent and court systems that does such a lousy job of monitoring the process of innovation. The patent office might get a benefit of the doubt because who knows how many different people gets to handle a case. But a judge who supposedly should be well-schooled in reasoning and interpretation makes such an utterly idiotic call is just wasting the tax payer's money.
