Actually, it's not that new. Animated Today (http://www.gigabytesol.com/anitoday.htm) has been out since at least April 2002. Do you happen to know if AT themes are compatible with FlashThemes?
When I tried FlashThemes a while back, I did find at least one bug. If your Today page takes more than one screen, some Flash themes won't work well when scrolled. I'm using version 1.1.1, which still seems to be the current freeware version.
There's also a FlashThemesPro player, which NetWasp wants to "sting" you $13.95 for. I don't know how well that works, though.
Finally, I came to the same conclusion as you did -- it's kind of cool, but not anything I'd really spend money on. Of course, I wouldn't spend money on any theme, Flash or not.
It could be useful, though, if combined with something dynamic. Imagine a stock ticker on your Today screen, or a map showing the position of a friend based on GPS. I don't know if the NetWasp player is sufficient to do that, though.
For things Flash-related, you should probably check out Flash Enabled (http://www.flashenabled.com); Phillip Torrone is the master of mobile Flash. In fact, he literally wrote the book (http://www.flashenabled.com/book) on it (or at least part of the book).
