Microsoft had already announced that Windows CE version 5.0 would include Direct 3D Mobile (D3DM), a version of the companies Direct X 3D rendering engine. However, it wasn't known how long this would take to make it into the Pocket PC OS. That would depend on when Pocket PC OS switches from being based on Windows CE 4.2, as it is now, to Windows CE 5.0.

In a recent interview Mark Spain, director of Microsoft's mobile devices division, told The Star Online (http://star-techcentral.com/tech/story.asp?file=/2004/4/29/itfeature/7852099&sec=itfeature) that the next major version of Pocket PC OS would have Direct 3D Mobile built in.

That's good news to Pocket PC gamers, who can expect better 3D rendering in programs. It's also good news to Pocket PC users in general because it means the next major OS upgrade will include all the other enhanced features of Windows CE 5.0 as well.
