A GPS is really only as good as the software you use in coordination with. The best GPS in the world will not lead you home if it can't show you where home is. In this review we are looking at VITO Technology's SmartMap. A small-footprint GPS application that uses vector or raster maps for its images. But is it worth the $30 price tag? Can it really help one feel less lost?

Given that you can often get Microsoft Streets & Trips for $30 or less (which has map data included), and that Pocket Streets supports GPS, why would I bother with this?
If I needed to use custom maps (but didn't need routing), I suppose it would be useful. With the track displayed, it might also be useful for ad hoc GPS drawing (http://www.gpsdrawing.com). Unfortunately, those seem like fairly limited uses.
