After a long history of creating quality Pocket and Handheld PCs, Hewlett Packard takes it first stab at the growing smartphone segment with their all new HP iPAQ h6315. With integrated WiFi, Bluetooth, and 850/900/1800/1900 Quad Band GSM/GPRS Cellular capability, this Phone Edition is the first to pack in so much wireless functionality into one product. Let's see if this device lives up to its namesake.

Is the thumb keyboard backlit like the great model they had for the Jornada 568?

Hi there-
Unfortunately no, it is not backlit.

On the back of the 6315, towards the top, to the left of the speaker is a small rubber plug. On the photos submitted to the FCC for approval it shows the rubber plug removed and what looks like a connector.

Some cell phones use this type of connector for an external antenna or car kit. Do you know if this connector made it through to the production model, and is it for an external antenna?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

Whoops... one other thing can the standard foldable HP iPAQ keyboard be used with the 6315?

Any word on pricing if you already are signed on with TMobile? In other words without the subsidy?

That's awesome about the Bluetooth headset being able to play phone and/or other audio!!
Can you initiate a call from the Bluetooth headset? Like, can a button on the Bluetooth headset start Voice Command listening and then can you say stuff, or do you still have to press a hardware button on the iPAQ in order to start Voice Command (at which point you can dictate through the headset)?

The MMS Composer program looks like the same ArcSoft MMS Composer software that's bundled with the XDA 2 type devices. I wonder if the H6300 has a new version of that which integrates fully with the native Inbox application! That's VERY cool! But I hope the MMS messages are not stored in the Inbox database since this is VERY buggy on Windows Mobile 2003. For example, you won't be able to restore from a backup without corrupting the database and it's unique identifiers.

Can you play MP3s in your car stereo, while listening to GPS Voice directions, while talking on the phone through the Bluetooth Headset, while downloading email over WiFi??? :)
Also, what kind of delay is there when you're listening to WMA files in Media Player and then you tap the "Playlist" button to show all the other songs on the SD Card? I hate that delay on my imate Pocket PC Phone and iPAQ H3970. It never happened on the H3600 with a Compact Flash card.

I guess it didn't come with a wired Stereo headset, huh? Also, did I miss how much ROM storage area there is? Or is it ONLY the 64Mb of RAM that the user has access to?

I like the buttons on the side accessible by the fingers that will be holding the device. It's almost my UDA (http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=291)! :)

Next we need stereo Bluetooth profiles and a removable clip-on Bluetooth headset.

Will these phones only be able to connect to T-Mobile?

Say I buy one now and want to switch to Sprint in 6 months.. will that be possible?

I have been waiting for the 6300 for a while, but worry about T-Mobile due to my being in non-urban areas a lot.

Unfortunately, no. My bluetooth headset's button becomes completely useless once connected to the device. The only thing I can use it for is to end a call. To initiate Microsoft Voice Command, I still have to use one of the h6315's hardware buttons.

Can you play MP3s in your car stereo, while listening to GPS Voice directions, while talking on the phone through the Bluetooth Headset, while downloading email over WiFi??? :)

In short, you can do all the things you mentioned simultaneously except using the Bluetooth headset while connected to a Bluetooth GPS. For some reason, it wont allow two concurrent data-based connections. You'll have to answer calls on the phone itself. But, interestingly enough, I spent today talking on the phone while still getting GPS directions voiced over my conversation. Neat!

Also, did I miss how much ROM storage area there is? Or is it ONLY the 64Mb of RAM that the user has access to?

There is up to 20Mb available of iPAQ File Store (unused flash ROM storage).

To be honest, this is something that I may need to look in to. On my XDA II (i-mate Phone Edition), it is a very obvious option since "Wireless Modem" is a Settings panel applet. I'm still uncertain about the h6315.

The 6315 is only supported on the GSM/GPRS network. Sprint is strictly a CDMA network so the 6315 can't be used in a Sprint network.

I'm still unfamiliar with GSM so I said Sprint without thinking.

Say I want to switch to Verison or Cingular at a later date. Can I get a SIm chip from them, or will the early 6300's be locked to T-Mobile SIM cards?

Still worried about the lack of GSM coverage compared to CDMA, but thats not a 6300 issue.

Verizon is out too they are CDMA... your looking at ATT or Cingular.... it will be locked to TMobile... however in my past experience TMobile has been good about unlcoking if you have been a customer for a couple of months....

Overall, this Pocket PC has really impressed me. I find that the minimal amount of RAM and poor CPU performance are more than over shadowed by the iPAQ's battery life and rock solid stability. This device is a true multi-tasker, making complex switches in connectivity seemingly transparent to the end user.
Thanks for the good review, Derek.

The slow CPU, as you speculated, is most likely to keep power consumption down. Did you notice much of a lag in any applications, though?

Also, you listed the dimensions as 4.68" x 2.95" x 0.73". Did that include the antenna?

One thing I would disagree with, though, is saying this had a "minimal" amount of RAM. 64 MB is what I would call "average"; 32 MB, like the pathetic 1715, is truly minimal. :D

Finally, regarding the built-in camera, I have to say that I don't think it's useless. While it certainly won't compare to "real" digital cameras, if you carry the 6315 with you everywhere like you might a phone, you'll always have a camera available for those spur-of-the-moment shots. Unless you always take your digial camera with you, too, this can be a real benefit.

Sure, I'd like it to have better resolution (1.3 or even 2 megapixels), an optical zoom and a flash (even more important than the other two), but it's better than nothing.

Do you know if accessories designed for ipaq 5xxx series will work with 6315’s serial/usb connector? They look very similar, but it is hard to tell from the pictures. Specifically, I have a GPS receiver that I would like to use with 6315.

You asked what gave the idea that the phone was locked to T-Mobile, and he gave some evidence.

It's true that the evidence isn't conclusive, but it certainly could lead to the conclusion that the phone is locked. There's no need for insults.

If Hewlett Packard could just follow a couple examples that HandSpring/PalmOne did with their GSM Treo 600 release:
-Offer a generic (unlocked) edition on their website w/o any carrier subsidy; i.e. Treo 600 @ $699
-Offer a large discount to loyal owners of limited earlier models by submittal of serial number; i.e. Treo 600 w/ $300 off for owners of the T180, T270, or T300.
Yes I admit to buying a Palm ...it was the best converged device on the market! It was bought to stave off frustration with HP regarding the release of this llooonngg rumored Ipaq 6000. I considered all PPC devices and even tried the Ipaq 2215 w/ Convergent Tech's CF GSM modem. Still it was only Tri-band and Cingular/AT&T have doulbed their GSM coverage, but at 850Mhz. Also, despite having Bluetooth one had to use an earbud with the jack on the CF modem. Jabra makes a BT adaptor but the whole idea of converging is to cut down on hardware and wires! For some reason no PPC phone manufacturer would include BT. HandSpring left room on the Treo 600's motherboard for the BT radio but chose not to include it in this iteration of the product line. Go figure?

The HTC Himalaya (http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=297) Pocket PC Phone was released around the same time as the Treo 600. That was the first Pocket PC Phone that would work with a Bluetooth headset. Granted it was never released in the US and cost $850 to get elsewhere.

I'm sure the H6300 will show up in unlocked versions over time.

Isn't HTC the actual manufacturer of the HP h6315? Don't they make all the Ipaqs?
I shopped this some time ago after seeing it on Expansys and the fact again that it was only Tri-band deterred me. Cingular/AT&T are primarily putting up 850 Mhz towers and if I travel to the Caribbean anytime soon I believe that is what most if not all of their GSM networks are.

Your review is the most comprehensive and unbiased I have read regarding the 6315. It is greatly appreciated!
In your discussions with HP concerning EDGE did you bring up the question that maybe the T-Mobile edition would not have it enabled because they don't support it, but rather it will be enabled in the Cingular/AT&T edition? If units can be built w/ or w/o cameras having EDGE capabilities on board seems simple enough to enable/disable them????

Thanks for the backup Pony :)
Look NOWAY-TMOBILE seems silly to argue over this since you have no more proof than I do it will be locked or unlocked. Frankly when was the last time you were able to buy an "exclusive phone" from any provider that came unlocked? What in the world would it be in T-Mobile's interest to sell and unlocked phone that they are paying part of the subsidy for? Sounds like you have some dilussional wishful thinking going on. Also why would HP sell an unlocked phone with a T-Mobile sim? Maybe eventually it will be sold unlocked but for now I am willing to bet it's locked down.

I have a newbie question. Because the 6315 has a new processor does this mean that it will not run my current applications I purchased? My current iPaq is a H3975 and has a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor. Normally when I download a program, like a game, it asks which processor I have. Will all the companies that create software have to port them to this new processor for them to run? I would think because it is a slower processor that there will not be a ton of devices that use it and therefor not a lot of applications for it. I would hate to purchase this and find out it will not run most of the software out there.

BTW- Sorry about accidently creating a new thread, I meant to post this here.

The TI OMAP is based on the ARM architecture, and so most programs should run fine on it. In fact, Microsoft requires ARM-compatible processors for Pocket PC (and I assume all Windows Mobile) devices.

The Windows Mobile 2003 system includes Pocket Internet Explorer, which supports Microsoft's version of JavaScript (JScript). I'm not sure how complaint it is with the ECMA standard, though.

That I can't answer. While the JavaScript implementation works for some things, I'm not an eBay user, so I can't comment on whether that will work. If you have access to a Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003, check it out and see.

I can say that it is sufficient to access my credit union's online banking system and to properly work with my Web site (http://www.svpocketpc.com), which uses JavaScript to handle the preferences.

This is though the model without camera... and I haven´t found a single webshop in Europe that will offer this Ipaq with camera.

So, my question is... Do anyone know if I would be able to buy one from the US, and then just put an extra order in Sweden for a Swedish AC/-cord?? Exept from the powersupply / AC-cord the device must be exactly the same - isn´t it???

Please note that I don't have a 6300. I tested that on my iPAQ 5550 running Windows Mobile 2003.

I would be surprised if the iPAQ 6315 didn't support JavaScript at least as well.

I received the answer to the question about the TI OMAP CPU from HP Support. Here it is:
********************
Dear HP Customer,

Thank you for contacting HP eServices.

This is with reference to your e-mail regarding the H6315 iPAQ.

Please note that the processor IT OMAP 1510 CPU is from Texas Instruments and it supports the Adobe Acrobat reader and NetFront web browser.

However, there could be a limitation of the Pocket Internet Explorer browser in terms of handling some HTML elements, such as IFRAME, JavaScript, or some multimedia effects.

Please e-mail us if you need any clarification and we will be glad to help.

Thank you,

As I said, while not all JavaScript will run, Pocket IE definitely supports some of it. I doubt HP would have stripped that function out of Pocket IE on the 6315.

However, IFrames definitely don't work. Regular frames are supported, though (my credit union's Web uses them).

You can see both JavaScript and IFrames in action on the Preferences page (http://prefs.svpocketpc.com) of my Web site. I use JavaScript to set the user preferences (and Cascading Style Sheets to display them) and an IFrame to display the results before the user saves them.

On my iPAQ 5550, the preferences are set fine, which means that JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets are working, but there's no preview because the IFrame isn't supported.

Also, I'm pretty new to Bluetooth technology. My main reason for the phone is for a wireless headset, but am I correct in understanding that if I purchase a Bluetooth adapter for my PC, I can sync the h6315 with my PC without using the cradle?

I don't know about the 6315, but you should be able to sync using Bluetooth.

My iPAQ 5550 has ActiveSync listed in the Bluetooth Manager. Unfortunately, I can't say how well it works because my stupid Belkin Bluetooth adapter doesn't work on my laptop.

However, I would recommend using WiFi to sync unless you don't have a WiFi network and do have a Bluetooth-enabled PC. WiFi will be faster, have better range and may even be easier to configure.

Hello,

I'm a smartphone addict like all here and have a few questions concerning the h6315 if anyone knows the answer.

By the way Derek, superb review of the h6315!!!

1) Do you have to keep the power on in order to receive a phone call????
This would be important as I usually keep my PDA off while in my pocket, though it seems unlikely that you can receive a call while the power is off.

2) How is the volume and quality of the earpiece, microphone, and speaker phone while talking on the phone?

3) Is it easy to use POP3 accounts such as Yahoo using Pocket Inbox? Can you send and receive attachments? I have not been succesful doing this with my 2210 and SE T610. I have to connect to Yahoo.com and check my mail that way, though I cannot send mail.

Thanks very much!

Is Yahoo really a POP3 account? The Yahoo Mail page said you could access other POP3 accounts from Yahoo, but it didn't claim that you could access it via POP3.

I have no problems sending and receiving E-mail on my iPAQ 5550 on my ISP's POP3 system. I haven't tried sending attachments, but I think I've received some.

I am >< close to buying one of these nifty little units, but before I take the plunge, I would like to know a few things:

1. I realize it's SIM locked, but I called TMobile and asked them if they would unlock as I travel internationally on a frequent basis. They said they would, but has anyone seen a provision for entering an unlock code anywhere, or did I get a clueless CSR as usual?

2. Are any of the normally user-modifiable settings hard-coded in a the currently shipping ROM/T-Mobile firmware? Can I change GPRS APN settings, etc?

3. It looks like voice dial commands from a bluetooth headset are not yet possible, correct? Not a huge deal-breaker for me, but it would be nice.

Thanks,

Rob

I wonder why T-Mobile would unlock your phone for international travel when they would like to provide you with the service for 99c per minute (and more in some countries.) Sure we'd all like to buy a local phone card and make locals calls for 5c a minute, but I can't see this happening in the T-mobile business model.

Just picked up my h6315 from T-Mobile. I got to the store 15 minutes before opening and no one was waiting. I could hear the phones continually ringing inside however. Once I got inside, I told the CSR that I what I wanted and we proceeded to the checkout. There were at least 3 calls while I was waiting asking about the h6315. There were only 4 at the store I went to and they weren't able to put any of them on hold.

I am having a problem figuring out how to Activesync via WiFi, however. I found a guide on the forums but I still can't seem to get it to work. :(

I too picked one up at my local T-mobile store and while I am quiet impressed by the unit it is still plagued by connectivity problems. It connected to my home network fine, but refuses to connect here at work and connecting to GPRS network is problematic. It worked fine for a while, but now won't connect. Even when it did connect using GPRS it was very slow - and I don't just mean in comparison to Wi-Fi. My old 300 baud modem was faster ...

Rob,

I bought the 6315 w/ the intent of unlocking it and YES there are some provisions to unlcok any phone from t-mobile. You have to be a t-mobile customer for at least 3 months for them to unlcock the unit. I am trying to find a friend w/ t-mobile so that they can request the unlock for me and then proceed from there. It is a matter of giving the IMEI #, what type of unit, and what email address to send the result too, takes up to 24 hours. Mine got rejected b/c I don't have a t-mobile account. I prefer Cingular, they have much better coverage.

Is there anyone out there that will help me request an unlock code from T-mobile so that I can get this unit unlocked? You could even have it sent to my email address.

You have to call customer care at 800-937-8997, tell them you would like an unlock code for your new HP IPAQ h6315 phone so that you can use it internationally and here is the IMEI # 352795000189836, and here is the email address to send the results too jbrice@jbrice.com.

I would appreciate anyones help. Thanks.

I installed Microsoft's Voice Command and was able to use it with a Jabra BT200. I'm having trouble getting it to recognize the word "yes" but I'm sure it's a software problem since I can't get it to recognize "yes" without a headset attached.

I've been having troubles with GPRS as well.. I can connect, browse and check out the web ok.. It's slow and I'm used to it with my Nokia 3650 I had.. No problem with it being slow.. But I do have problems once I start to send anything of size.. If I try to send a picture email, or any email over 10k, it will not send, period.. If I use the 6315 as a bluetooth modem and try to send a 10k email out on the laptop, the 6315 just drops the connection to GPRS and tells me it has disconnected.. I'm thinking maybe T-Mobile has yet to get things straight.. But I can place my SIM card back in the 3650 and it all works flawless.. So we shall see.. Can someone try and send an email with a picture attached through their phone and see if it ever goes out???

You need to have true GPRS set up not the wap/tzones junk that comes pre-installed.... you can do this in the connection manager, by editing the connection from wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com that should fix your speed problems.

I've already thought of that.. I've tried internet2 and internet3.. They all do the exact same thing.. As soon as the email is sent, I can see in the bluetooth mananger the data being sent to and from the 6315.. It stops sending/receiving data between the laptop and the 6315 and then I get a disconnect on the GPRS from the PDA..

My issue looks to be a big problem.. I got to their tier 3 in the wireless data dept. and they pulled out a 6315 and tried with their email.. Same issue.. I'm going to try to email a few sites that have reviewed this unit and let them know about the problem.. I like the device, but hey.. I can't send a freakin email with any size..

hi,
thanks for the excellent very comprehensive review.

one question... the review says:
"The HP iPAQ h6315 is slated to be available from both HP and T-Mobile. If ordered from T-Mobile, they will send the phone with an activation kit. If ordered from HP, it will come with a SIM card and a phone number for T-Mobile to activate it."

what is the significance of this? i am new to GSM currently on Sprint CMDA sprint. i understand that phones can be locked to one carriers SIM chip, right? but reading the above kinda implies that, while if you order from HP the unit will come with a SIM card, possibly the unit with TMobile will not come with a SIM card? Or does this comment imply something about locked vs unlocked?

i read thru this thread and it seems the consensus is that no matter what you do, this phone most likely will be locked, so i am confused.

also, sorry if too OT but where should I buy one for the cheapest price?

Price aside, I remember something about CompUSA being good because they had a TAP program that you could get a newer phone 2 years later so maybe thats the way to go...?

I have the same problems with e-mail and more. I've got my new iPAQ6315 on the first day 8/26 and from the first day I'm having problems with multiple things, here are just few of them:

1-The first day I couldn't connect to internet with GPRS connection, the documentation said that I don't need to configure anything because GPRS is configured by the provider. Well I called the T-Mobile tech support and after changing the connection from wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com the internet connection start to work fine with every site except T-Mobile's it simply wouldn’t log me in saying "page not found"

2-The e-mail problem is annoying too, after calling tech support and going through the mailbox configuration with them for the n time I still can't send an e-mail of any size through GPRS connection. The same e-mail in my Outbox will go out fine through Wi-Fi or ActiveSync connections.

3-I thing that T-Mobile have some sort of problems with their mail server because accessing it through my desktop's high speed connection it takes forever to access and refresh the pages in Myemail.t-mibile.com site.

4-Yesterday the T-mobile tech support after spending with me on the phone 45 minutes told me that they're having problems with their servers and are upgrading them now and for me to check again after 24 hours. Noting fix today, it acts the same.

5-I have to soft reset my device at home in order to connect to my Wi-Fi network and if I have GPRS connected and try to connect to Wi-Fi my unit intermittently will freeze.

Those are only few problems I'm having and the tech support isn’t very helpful so far. I thing that they are hiding some problems they didn't anticipate with the new device and their e-mail servers connecting through GPRS.

Any suggestion before I return my unit? I only have one more week of test period.

I was wondering... I own the tmobile pocket pc phone edition and was not happy with its video playback. Do you know or could you find out if the HP ipaq 6315 has better hardware or softeware that will increase video playback. example: processer speed and things such as that. Tmobile pocket pc phone VS Hp ipaq 6315.

What processor does your Pocket PC Phone have? The 6315 has a 168 MHz TI OMAP, I think, so it doesn't sound very fast.

Whether the low frequency means bad video performance, I don't know.

I have activesync set to sync with activesync server (exchange) every 10 minutes. Even though the unit is on standby it comes out of it. This did not happen with my XDA. I called T-Mobile tech support 2nd level support, they called HP and were told the unit was designed that way. Hard to believe, has anyone else experienced this issue. It is very anoying because every time I have it in my pocket, programs are activated randomly since the unit gets turned on at every sync.

Also has anyone had problems with activesync on the PC recognizing Virtual Comm ports 10 and above. I am trying to set up bluetooth activesync but the com port option I have on my Thinkpad only allows for 10 and above.

I think it is probably appropriate for this board to start a section on the 6315.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would expect it to work this way; in fact, I thought Pocket PCs already did this.

It allows polling the server, and, with a short enough interval, is almost like push E-mail (like Blackberry).

It would be nice to have an option to control whether the Pocket PC would actually turn on, though.

The boards will be getting a redesign soon, so I expect there will be a new section for the 6300s. (I don't know exactly when this will be, so stay on the lookout.)

Terrific review, thanks. A few questions, if you don't mind:

1) How the heck do people carry this thing? Wear it on your belt like a phone or carry in a pocket like a PDA? Since I'm considering converging, I'm predisposed to a holster, but this doesn't seem holster-friendly, is it?
2) I read the new Treo650 has some improved feature for locking the screen so you don't push buttons in transit. Any similar problems here?
3) I've heard some so-called Smartphones have problems syncing with Outlook, such as getting confused between wired sync to a notebook then unwired sync to Outlook directly. Any experience with this?
4) Is Goodlink required for wireless syncing to Outlook? Or are there other ways?

Thanks very much! --KurtisT

Hopes high, finally decided to purchase it, used it for a week...here is my feedback.

Reason:

1) Poor functionality as a phone and it has very poor reception, then maybe it's just T-Mobile's pathetic coverage so after unlocking it, I used Cingular's nework, a little better but no cigar.

2) The device is really slow, it freezes 6 time a day and it is really not thought out in the design.

So in conclusion:

It's no good as a phone, it's slow as a PDA....so what good is it?..
I have certainly learned my lesson here...never buy anything first generation or the first to be on the market.

I cannot think of anyway to make HP or T-Mobile care (I have tried) so it's on it's way back to them...

I guess when they start seeing a ton of returns....they will start asking why...hopefully.
