View Full Version : Dashboard Install Problem - New Release

I came across an interesting install problem with the new release on my Compaq iPAQ. It doesn't seem to exist with the old release, as that one works quite well. Since nobody else has posted this same problem so far, I'm assuming that it's just something I'm doing wrong...

First off, I just got my replacement iPAQ in the other day, so this Dashboard install is going onto a clean iPAQ. I've followed the installation instructions outlined in the readme file-
1. Installing Dashboard by running the .exe from Windows itself, with the iPAQ connected via ActiveSync
2. Opening the DashHelper application, and selecting the "Install" option
3. Going to Settings/Today, deselecting all other modules except for Dashboard, and moving Dashboard as far up the list as possible
4. Performing a soft reset

The problem is that after the soft reset, all I get is a blank screen where Dashboard should be running. Occaisionally, I'll end up with a few punctuation marks on the upper left hand side (looks like a few periods or something).

I've tried uninstalling, then reinstalling- and it hasn't changed anything. I even tried installing the older version, and then installing the update for the iPAQ (I registered the program last night, apparently shortly before the new version was put up). The old version worked just fine, but as soon as I upgraded to the new version, the same problems surfaced again.

Any ideas?

Here are some specifics:
==========
Machine: Compaq iPAQ H3600 series
ROM: v1.69
No other applications running (no other applications even installed at this point)

I appreciate any help you can render, as I really registered Dashboard specifically for the enhancements of the new version... Thanks!

Chris,

I don't have any suggestions, but you're not the only one with this problem. The problem you described happened exactly the same on my iPaq (same ROM version). I also tried to install dashboard on a "fresh formatted" machine without any success. The update version (for iPaq) works, so you could download this version.

Carel,

I've also tried following the steps outlined for the update from the older version, and have had the same exact results. http://www.pocketnow.com/ubb/icons/icon9.gif

Maybe there's something that I missed or did incorrectly with the update, then, as well?

Hi,

Yes, I've received maybe 5 or so emails about this and am trying to investigate it... If you'd like to help and haven't already emailed me - email me and I'll be working on it over the weekend.

Thanks!

Same issue when i tried to do a clean install on EM-500. I get a blank screen with "_..." (without quotes) on the top left hand side of the screen.
Frustration building up when seeing others rejoicing with no problems.

Hi Sam,

What happens if you remove ALL skins off of your device except for the SnoopDefault skin included with the initial Dashboard install...

Then soft-reset?

Thanks!

I am assuming you are taking about Dashboard skins not Gigabar skins. I deleted all skins from the skins folder (dashboard) except "SnoopDefault", it still didn't work.

Sam,

After playing around for a little bit, I came up with a possible work-around...

After installing Dashboard and performing your soft reset (when you're left with the blank screen), try the following...

Go to Start -> Programs, and run the Dashboard application listed there (not DashHelper, but the Dashboard application). After the app executes, you'll see a single menu item at the bottom of the screen (Options, or something like that). Click it, and enter the Dashboard configuration screen. Select a Dashboard skin from the dropdown on the skins tab. Then perform a soft reset... This seemed to work for me.

Hey - I FINALLY reproduced this thing this morning running in the C++ emulator. I should have an update out later this weekend for it.

Thanks for helping me out!
