Hi All,

I don't know much about computers...just enough to get around and stress me out.

I am trying to sync from act to outlook and then from outlook to the pocket pc.

I have installed active sync4.1 and I can succesfully sync from act to outlook but I can not figure out how to sync outlook to the ppc 6700. Any ideas.

Brian

Hi there,

I'm assuming that you are trying to sync over a wired connection.

When you plug in your device, does ActiveSync start up?

Trying going through these options to set what you want to be syncronized from Outlook, once your device is plugged in:

In ActiveSync, click Tools, Options, then where it says Windows PC, check the boxes of the data types you want to sync.

Let me know how it works out!

I got the thing to sync up. It took a REALLY long time but it was successful.

My problem now is that I keep getting low memory errors. I do not have any other software installed at this time other than what it came with.

My database has 7000 contacts in it. Is this too Many? Also...I have a 1gig expansion card, what can I run on that to keep my memory better?

thanks,
Brian

Wow --- 7000 contacts, you know a lot of people!

Yes, that could certainly impact memory. Personally, I try to install as many programs as possible to a memory card, since 80% of programs will function perfectly as such. Maybe you could uninstall a few programs from main memory, and reinstall to an expansion card.

I don't actually know all those people but thye are all in my data base.

I started moving files to the card...Ill let you know how that works.

Thanks for the help.

What files are you moving? You said you didn't have any other programs installed, so the only files would be those that you synced, right?

If so, remember that moving them to a memory card means they will not stay in sync with your desktop. Also, if you move them to your memory card, the files in your PC's synchronized files folder will be deleted, so make sure you back them up. (Of course, the memory is also a backup, but memory cards do go bad.)

I was moving around stuff that came with the ppc. I think there are files that there are applications that should not be moved?

After I moved everything I couldn't get on the internet anymore.

I had to hard reset the hand held.

Definitely don't move files that shipped on the device. There are some small files that will cause Pocket Internet Explorer to fail if they're deleted (or, probably, moved). I don't have a Windows Mobile 5 device, but, in WM 2003, they're called CMMapG and CMMapP and they're located in the ConnMgr folder. In fact, I think they were moved to the ConnMgr folder because, in Pocket PC 2002, they were located in the My Device root folder and people were deleting them.

The good news is that you often don't have to hard reset to fix the problem. If you only moved the files I'm referring to, running the Welcome program (the one that shows you how to cut and paste and sets your time zone) will fix that without requiring a hard reset. Go to the Windows folder and run welcome.exe.

Thanks for the scoop on the welcom exe. It worked and I was able to avoid a hard reset.

It seems like the memory problem was from the outlook sync.

I am using a program called companion link to sync with my act and the memory problems went away.

But now I have a new problem...I can sync using a purge and reload option wich overwrites the hand held. But when I try to do a regular sync Active Sync will not move beyond "looking for Changes"

Any ideas on that?

Not really. All I can think of is that with 7000 contacts, it takes a long time to look for changes. How long have you waited before giving up?

If you've let it run overnight without any luck, try Pocket PC FAQs (http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs.htm). Chris de Herrera has one of the best collections of ActiveSync tips you'll find.

When I leave it overnight it does sync up succesfully. That is a breakthrough and I can live with it if I have to.

My frame of reference is my Palm. When I sync the same data it takes about 5min total. The discrepancy bugs me.

Thankyou for the link. Lots of good info there.
