Well, well... two quick news blurps, both courtesy of msmobiles.com.

First off, there is an update to the rumoured Windows Mobile Treo for GSM (http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5421.html). There is even a photo! Remember that this is going to be a Palm product running Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs, much like the Treo 700w but supports UMTS (3G) for the GSM networks. (The current Treo 700w supports GSM with EVDO.) This is quite exciting, as the photo probably indicates that it is already getting field tested. This means that some prototypes have been shipped off to the large magazine/news editors (e.g. Wall Street Journal), their own executives and product managers, and some selected people to get their feedbacks on everyday use!

In another development, msmobiles.com also has some slides from a talk by Robbie Bach (http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5422.html) who is the boss for all portable and gaming devices at Microsoft (including Windows Mobile, Zune and the Xbox). One slide showed that Microsoft is supposedly making money from the Windows Mobile unit (profitable), but another slide said that Microsoft is predicting a loss in Fiscal Year 2007, albeit smaller than in Fiscal Year 2006. *scratch head* Some accounting irregularities? Just kidding. Maybe it just means that at the time of making the slides, the unit was profitable for that day/month. Some other interesting tidbits:

10.6 million units of Windows Mobile devices have been sold.
14.7 million units of Windows Embedded devices sold. (That makes 4.1 million units of Windows XP Embedded and Windows CE devices?)
Interestingly, Nokia, RIM and Linux were identified as competitors, with no mention of market leader, Symbian!

When commenting on the future for Fiscal Year 2007 on Windows Mobile, the slide showed a very unreassuring: more Windows Mobile and CE. It sounds like Microsoft might just rest on its laurels and merely try to sell more devices with minor updates? Not sure... only time will tell!

Again, feel free to click and read (http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5422.html) msmobiles.com's take on it!

Finally, to wrap up the day, we have leaks on a new Windows Mobile device. This one comes from MSMobileNews (http://www.msmobilenews.com/page/1364/). The device is the ORSiO PDA phone Pocket PC. The specifications are:
- OS: Windows Mobile/PP CPE (Magneto AKU3)
- Quad-band GPRS/EDGE class 10
- CPU: Intel Bulverde 524 MHz
- Radio BB : ADI
- 262k color 2.7" QVGA
- Standby time : min. 250hrs
- Talk time : min. 6hrs
- Battery : Li-Polymer 1500mAh
- 2.0 M pixel CMOS camera W/LED torch
- Memory : 192MB Flash/64MB SDRAM
- Storage : External Mini-SD card supported
- MPEG4 Encode/Decode QVGA full screen
- KJAVA( CLDC 1.1/MIDP2.0) supported

Note that the specifications are different in the photos compared to what is written above, making me wonder if the leaks are trustworthy. Furthermore, while it is refreshing to see a fast processor on a Windows Mobile phone, the specifications are really... uninspiring. It looks to be just the typical run-of-the-mill Pocket PC phone. Once again, click here (http://www.msmobilenews.com/page/1364/) for more info including grainy photos!

Ciao! Be back later!

Doesn't Nokia basically own Symbian?

Good point! There are several million non-Nokia phones also using Symbian OS though. I believe Sony-Ericsson also supports Symbian OS for their smartphones. I guess it would be a bit like saying that PalmOne is the competitor rather than PalmSource (in the past) if that's they meant!

I've been away from the cellphone industry for awhile. I remember that Nokia got a controlling percentage of Symbian, and then Ericsson was unhappy. Did Nokia actually buy up all 100% of Symbian?

I thought they officially bought them, but Symbian's About page (http://www.symbian.com/about/index.html) says they're privately-held, so I don't know for sure.
