Preconception: Collapsing stylii are evil.
Perhaps I shouldn't be so broad, but it has been my experience that collapsing stylii are painful to use and often break/fail to act as a decent input device due to their size.
The 8525 has a tiny collapsing stylus (about an inch and a half long at its smallest), but it has more heft than your standard plastic chopstick. This stylus certainly stays in its appropriate spot better than the XV6700, even though it is located on the bottom of the phone. Sliding out the stylus causes it to expand (smoothly but with no wiggle), returning the stylus collapses it in the port.
The end of the stylus is a little rough, but certainly not a deal-breaker.
So not all collapsing stylii are bad, with the 8525's showing off what can be done.
