If you are the proud new owner of the AT&T Tilt, the TyTN II (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=988) variant sold through AT&T, you will notice that AT&T has added some extra contents compared to the HTC unit. Some of this extra content comes in the form of trial applications and games, most of which are Java-based.

A useful tip for those new to Windows Mobile comes to us from TiltSite (http://tiltsite.com/2007/10/how-to-beat-the-bloat-on-your-att-tilt/). If you wish to remove those trial apps and not have them installed, you'll need to perform a few steps.

First, use Sprite Backup to backup your data. Second, perform a hard reset on your Tilt. You can do this by going to Start Menu, Settings, and then go to Clear Storage under the System tab or you can do this by holding the left and right softkeys down while depressing the reset button with the stylus. Next, you'll want to reboot the device and go through the setting up process. After that process, a popup will appear that will begin the AT&T customization. When this appears, press the reset button with the stylus again to perform a soft reset and cancel that process.

By soft reseting as the customizations are about to install, you will have saved yourself some valuable storage space that would have been wasted on trialware. Of course, you will want to restore your content via Sprite Backup after the process is completed.

Great find, Chuong.

I was wondering what would happen if I reset the device during the "customization" loads. I agree - it would **** a lot of program memory.

Has anybody tried it? I've read on XDA-Developers that it will actually do the same trick for any other HTC device. I'll give it a try tomorrow on my Herald and keep you posted.

Interrupting the customization process is safe on most HTC phones--I can't say all because I haven't tested all phones. Basically, the core OS has been installed already. The customization just adds additional applications. Some may find these applications to be useful, but for most it just takes up program memory. I've done this on the Wizard, Hermes, Blue Angel, and the Kaiser.

Well I tried it on my Herald and though I did give up to 3mb in storage, I ended up having trouble with my Radio Stack. It probably has nothing to do with it but once I solve this, I'll try it again to see if there is any link between my problem and doing this. For now, not even a hard reset solved my problem so I'll try running the RUU again to clean up the mess.

This was the first thing that I did when I got my Tilt. I did it also on my 8525, my 8525, but it messed up the keyboard mapping. Though the one thing I did think of, is that the CAB files for all the bloatware is still in the ROM and right now, I have no way of deleting them off.

Does this really **** program memory, or just storage memory? Program memory, as is dynamically allocated RAM.

It would be storage memory. If you wanted to reclaim some program memory, you'd need to change your device's page pool. I honestly don't know of anybody that's done this on a tilt, but it works like a charm on my herald.
