We all thought that the Samsung i780 would be the success to the BlackJack, but were later corrected (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=4564).

The i780 is a Windows Mobile 6 Pro device with a similar form factor to that of the BlackJack. It's the first device to sport a 320x320 screen. It also packs HSDPA, WiFi, and GPS. Bringing it all together is a speedy 624MHz processor.

For other photos, click on to the::unwired (http://www.theunwired.net/?item=photoview-samsung-sgh-i780-windows-mobile-6-pocket-pc-phone), and for a full run down of specs on this bad boy, check out the detailed spec chart (http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=866).

The article and spec chart differ significantly on the specs. Arne Hess says the unit runs on a 400MHz processor and has 256MB/128MB of ROM/RAM, while the spec chart shows a 624MHz processor and 128MB/64MB. Since Arne actually has a unit to play with, I assume his specs are correct.

As much as I can't stand a "square screen" the fact it's 320x320 might help it. Next big question is that dpad/joystick?. WTF is that? Is that the emulated mouse? looks the suck.

Yeah, looks like the data in the database are the primary specs. I'll contact the owner to update it.

I think it's a joystick that has a mouse that moves across the screen, which would be nice for one-handed usage!

It looks like the screen may be flush, like the Touch/Touch Dual/Touch Cruise. If so, that would be a nice design.

Just noticed that! Flush is the way to go.

I was thinking this might make a good replacement for my AT&T 8525, but the specs seem to be Europe only. I wonder if there will be a US version?

Yeah - that's the main downer on the phone is that it's tri-band. We'll keep our eye on FCC postings to see if Samsung tries to wiggle this into the US. Perhaps it would make a good BlackJack 3!

Did anyone notice that the left softkey says phone? I wonder if Samsung is including a way to change what you want the softkey to be? That would be a nice touch. I know that there are plenty of hacks out there that could do it as well, but it would be great if the device manufacturers would start including this kind of feature.

I think Samsung just figures that most people want a faster way to get straight to the phone function. I'm surprised they did it on the i780 where you can 1. use the fixed keyboard to dial or 2. start typing a contacts name to bring up their number. Having the LSK say "phone" would be a good shortcut on an Artemis-like device.

A person also could just hit the green call key and that would bring up the phone application. Like you said, there are already several ways to get to the phone function, so I am confused as to why they would create a softkey dedicated to the phone. Like Adam, I think it would be nicer if the softkey could be set to "New" so you can create either new messages, documents, etc. Kind of like you could on WM2003.
