Engadget Mobile (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/10/no-joke-qualcomms-snapdragon-prototypes-dont-use-snapdragon/) has gotten notice from the Qualcomm public relations people that the new mobile platform (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=4930) that we have reported on doesn't run on the new chipset.

According to the people at Qualcomm, the referenced designs at CES were showing off some highly customized ARM chips and not the Snapdragon. Some of our forum members (http://discuss.pocketnow.com/showthread.php?threadid=22722) at Pocketnow.com did catch that the device was running slow for a 1 GHz powered device.

Qualcomm had shown off two reference design at CES--the Fairbanks and the Anchorage. Both platforms were reportedly showing off a new chipset design by Qualcomm called the Snapdragon. Snapdragon-powered Fairbanks and Anchorage devices would have improved battery life, increased processing power, and combined multiple radios into a small package. HTC uses current Qualcomm chipsets to power the GSM/3G radio, Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS along with a 400 MHz processor in the case of the TyTN II/Tilt. However, all these features have a negative impact on battery life. Snapdragon chips would increase processing power to 1 GHz and still be energy efficient.
