“Let’s face it, phones on Windows Mobile platform are still lagging seriously behind less-advanced commercial brands in terms of sales. So why hasn’t a major Windows Mobile phone company thought about doing a limited edition phone? With the upcoming Bond movie destined to be a smash sexy hit, why not do…say…an HTC Touch Diamond, James Bond edition? It could be as big as the movie.” Read on for Jenna’s rant (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1095).

Pocketnow is still going to deliver the award-winning comprehensive reviews and articles it is known for. Not so much a change in focus. Rather, a few specialized additions such as myself, to broaden our consumer base and general audience. But rest assured, Pocketnow will only be doing better than it already has been.:)

Well Jenna, all I have to say is that you have knocked another one out of the park...
I have enjoyed reading all of your reviews since I was told by a buddy of mine to take a peek at this site. You have always brought a freshness and positive way at looking boring things. Because of you I now own the Aliph Jawbone 2, and it's great... I can't wait for the next review. Oh ya I forgot Change is a good thing...
Thanks again

As far as a Bond Diamond goes I say it's a good idea to market it with a blockbuster movie in mind. I think there have previously been cell phones marketed with the Bond franchise. More importantly they usually incorporate the cell phone into the actual movie. People feel it's more of a "Bond phone" if bond actually uses it. That probably would cost HTC a bit more than just paying royalties for branding. I still think they should pursue it as it's more probable Bond would use a smart phone with WinMo or Symbian than the iPhone. Thank gawd. If Bond pulled out an iPhone I would lose all respect for the character and series.
I'll point out some things I think could be changed. 999$ is a bit high for software changes that anyone could do after the fact and one sole diamond(real?) considering you can pick one up for $650. You'd be surprised at how cheap it is for HTC to create/source out a totally different color case. That would be a better idea IMHO. Like gunmetal or even red. Red not so much maybe but how about metal alltogether? This would REALLY distinguish it against the other models and give the "Ltd." tag substantial meaning. Of course all the software tweaks and packaging can be done too. They could charge about $100 bucks more than the original and honestly would probably only cost them about 10$ more if that. Not including an all metal case.
Maybe they'll do this one day. James Bond though in particular is a good fit for a phone like the Diamond. In this day and age of marketing marketing marketing I'm sure there already is going to be an offical Bond phone for the new upcoming movie. I'll bet it's some metal'ish cool sounding slider made by Nokia or SE.

The last few bond movies have exclusively featured Sony Ericsson phones & Sony laptops. It significantly helps that Sony owns (some or part?) of MGM and Columbia Pictures ... the owners of the next bond flick.

I think the whole point is why can Sony Ericsson do this and not HTC or HP?
What does the Sony Ericcson Marketing team do right that our Windows Mobile manufacturers don't. Wouldn't it be nice if we saw a U2 eddition of the Omnia for example?
I agree with Jenna and add the fact that you all and I hold a device that can do ten times more than a typical "smartphone" from other OS' can, but, why is it so badly marketed? It's incredible how many consumers I see now a days holding a BlackBerry Pearl and not even have it connected to a BB server to get a bit of action on it, and not hold an HTC Touch that can do ten times more, without the need of being the parasite of a server.
It's all about Marketing. Was the Motorola RAZR V3 any better than the XDA Smartphones that debuted years ago? Not at all, but their marketing campaign did for the RAZR what no feature can do for a phone, and that is: "make people want to have it".

At pocketnow, we specialize in windows mobile phones. The Sony Ericsson models are nowhere near as advanced as the phones on windows mobile platform (Such as the HTC Diamond). And to be quite honest, they are all old hat phones that have been given a second release from a movie sponsor. All I'm saying is, for Bond to have the most advanced gadgetry, and to have him advertising a simple little camera phone doesn't add credibility to his innate coolness. As far as the idea being a day late and a dollar short. I know about the previous movie franchises doing gadgets. Have you seen the failed Matrix phone? I was talking about a windows mobile based company partnering up with a hollywood franchise to boost their platform. But hey, at least I gave you something to bitch at right? ;)

Well I put the reason in there ... Sony.
Sony has a stake in all the companies involved: Sony Ericsson, Sony computers, Sony Picture Studios (MGM, Columbia ...)
Since they make all the blockbusters it's easy to slip product placement/marketing in for their own brands.
I don't disagree ... I'd love to see some Windows Mobiles in the spot light. It probably just takes a TON of money to do it.
Microsoft coughed up some cash (along with others) to product place in the Gemini Division webisodes NBC has up, although this is more BRAND placement than product since the phone she uses doesn't exist.

Ah, yes, product placement would be a good place to start to pave the way for a limited-edition WinMo phone, and also to make the platform seem more flashy/sexy/mainstream. Remember when we saw Hannah Monatana (http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&id=4477&t=news) lust over a pink crystalized Motorola Q (Jenna, did you see this?). And how about when The Gemini (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=5767) online TV series featured a Windows Mobile tablet-like-thing? So, we've seen some attempts :D.

Haha. Yes, I do remember that episode clearly. My little niece used to watch Hannah Montana nonstop. It was a pretty great (and ingenius) attempt to make WMP more appealing to the public. Why do you think just about all my stuff is crystallized? lol. Who says function cant be pretty. I gotta take the time to see the Gemini thing though. Looks interesting. WM10? I can't wait!

Oh please, the SE C902 doesn't even have GPS, much less an accelerometer or multi-touch capacitive buttons. I bet the Touch Diamond's capacitive hardware could easily be programmed to electrocute any thief who tries to use the phone without permission. :)
Also, don't forget about Chloe's Mogul on Smallville (http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=5047).

You know,
Product placement in mind, remember the Motorola MPX200 Smartphone 2002 device aired the same year the Motorola RAZR V3 did? I'm trying to understand how could one device succeed so much and the other not? Both were built by the same manufacturer and marketed by the same team. Could it be that Marketing Windows Mobile Devices relies on some sort of agreement with Microsoft that could be actually slowing their own growth down?
Just a thought.

I think you answered your question (http://discuss.pocketnow.com/showpost.php?p=76315&postcount=4):
But at the end of the day, the average consumer just wants something that works without having to be too complicated.
And, let's face it, rightly or wrongly, Windows Mobile phones are perceived as complicated (and slow and unreliable in some circles).
Also, I don't think limited editions (if they're truly limited) will actually help sales much. It would certainly help Windows Mobile marketing, but I'm not sure the OEMs care about that; they want to sell devices (one reason HTC is making an Android phone, I suspect).
But, if anybody did produce a James Bond phone, they'd have to emboss the 007 logo into the case. Come on. ;)

Besides, don't you think it's good having a female on staff finally (especially a hot one). :) (Now if only she'd lick a Touch Diamond, we could have our own Jessica Chobot (http://stars.ign.com/articles/622/622426p1.html). :D)

The MPx200 was a fairly ugly, pedestrian-looking flip phone, while the RAZR was super-slim and sexy. Looks do matter to most people.
Now, if Motorola had gotten the MPx out faster, that may have done better. Another missed opportunity for Motorola.... :( At least they hit a home run with the Q series.

Jenna,
This is Something New, Something Different, Something Better.. Great article!
Guys, we're not changing, We're evolving! The fact of the matter is, Windows Mobile is a product we all love and are passionate about; but I know we all wish it was better. We've all had stability issues, phones that are good, and phones that are all bad, but that's not the biggest problem. Doesn't it make you itch when you see a phone that is half as good and just as expensive sell twice as fast? And then have friends of yours come up to you and say, your phone is nice, but mine is better, when you know he's wrong:rolleyes:.
Windows Mobile is such a fantastic platform; it's just incredible all you can do with it, but some manufacturers need to wake up a bit into how to make their successfull device be a success in sales. We're all consumers here, and as their targetted market, I know our word is all important into how they can understand what makes us drool for a new device. So if you have more ideas of how manufacturers can change their strategy and start selling the way they should, bring it on !

I know I'm a little late to the scene here, but Sony owns the rights to the Bond Franchise and they always pimp their phones (and every other product) in the films. They have released several Bond phones over the years - Boom (http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-6126627-7.html)! And as far as Windows Mobile is concerned.,, it sure would be nice if Sony Ericsson had a WM-based superphone coming out this Fall to compete with the Touch series... oh, wait... The XPERIA X1.

I must be a lil late my self... Ya like over a couple of hundred years. Did we go back in time??? I must say for people of intelligence you really have gone back wards. For some one that has an idea about something you slam them because they happen to be female??? Come on you have to be joking right... What are you afraid of a lil change that a woman can do and you can't???
Either you grow a set or borrow one from your buddy, because She unlike other people have brought the outsiders in to learn more about technology with out making them feel like a jackass.
But wait a minuet someone stated that "but Sony owns the rights to the Bond Franchise" Blah Blah... And "The last few bond movies have exclusively featured Sony Ericsson phones & Sony laptops. It significantly helps that Sony owns (some or part?) of MGM and Columbia Pictures ... the owners of the next bond flick. You're a day late and a dollar short ..." MORE B.S. BLAH BLAH WAAA!!!! So between the both of you!!! You are telling me that Apple owns the Rock Band U2 because they came out with a special iPod for them??? Come on!!! The XPERIA X1 looks like a brick with a keyboard attached... At least the HTC Touch Diamond has some style and class not like some people... Do you really thing that in a James Bond movie they are going to use a freek'n phone that looks like a Sidekick??? I thought that all the bond movies were all about the newest technology out to date and beyond. I can see it now... "I'm sorry Agent Fields I didn't mean to pop you in the eye with my phone wile trying to cut these chains..." or even better yet... " Sooo sorry 'M' I tried to save the world from infinite doom but the top half of my phone flew off and landed in the volcano..." Ya that will work... She was just stating that the function and form of the HTC Touch Diamond, could be easily be seen in a Bond flick and would look great packaged as the way she described. Hey I have an idea why don't you ask your mom when she is done fluff folding your jammies what phone she would pick??? Because women are still the largest purchasers on the face of this planet...

We're primarily a Windows Mobile site, so it's not too surprising that we didn't have an iPhone review, is it? Yes, we've occasionally strayed into BlackBerry (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1066) or Nokia (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1013), but that's not our strength. (Or maybe we just didn't get a review unit. I don't know.) Besides, aren't there lots of iPhone reviews out there at sites that specialize in the iPhone?

Please don't pick certain lines and take it out of context. Just to make things clear. I was STICKING UP for this beautiful, intelligent woman who happens to write very well. That's all. If I called her a "hot chick", I meant no disrespect (none whasoever Jenna). We all know she is hot. She probably knows she's hot too. But calling her a hot chick is not disrespectful when its followed by praise and support. My respose was directed towards the quote from the user that was putting her down as nothing more than a hot woman to "sex up the site" who doesn't know enough to have a featured article. I know what insulting is, and that's insulting. I was only sticking up for her, thats all.
To those that I may have offended, I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I do not mean to make a mockery out of your hobbies and professions. I WAS ONLY DIRECTING IT TOWARDS BTM84. I DO NOT own an iPhone. And when I said that line, I meant "why not?" Why not have a review on the biggest selling mobile device on the planet? It doesn't mean I want one. It doesn't mean you're not cool if you don't have one. Sure, its not a windows mobile device. But as a site whos bread and butter relies on traffic, software downloads and advertisers, wouldn't it make sense to at least have a comprehensive review on something that big, despite its limitations compared to windows mobile devices?
I am not as technologically savvy as any of you but I do want to learn more about windows mobile. Thats why I am here. And to Ms. Jenna, if you should read this, I really do think you are a great writer apart from being an intelligent, beautiful woman. As a woman in this field, you should be heralded, praised, offered any needed gentlemanly assistance and encouraged in a positive manner. ESPECIALLY by the men you work with.

I own the current HTC for Verizon. I dont know if its just me but the phone is a serious headache. I have had to replace it 2x since the start of the yr. Dont get me wrong. I enjoy WM 6.1 as well as the HTC format, but my phone just is a piece of s@!#....This Touch Diamond looks like a winner. I wouldnt even mind the James Bond Edition one. Pretty nifty ideas and marketing strategy from the lovely author. Gave me some fresh inspiration for my own ideas at work. Anyone know when the Diamond may be coming out for Verizon?
Thank you for the compliment. This should give you an idea on release dates for the Verizon Diamond. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/08/05/more-details-on-htcs-touch-diamond-touch-pro-for-verizon-and/

Beautiful and helpful. Now I can look forward to it coming out. I may just switch to Sprint though. It looks like they will have the better of two. Not to mention better plans. Thank you for the info. Keep writing.

Can we all at least agree Bond should never use an iPhone?

YESS!!
After seeing the picture of Anton and body-paint-girl, I don't think he has to worry about being uncool. Jenna and I definitely don't have to worry either, what with her Crystal Mogul (http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1071) and my Chromaflair Diamond (http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=5694). ;)

Haha. James Bond with an iPhone would be the most hilarious product placement. Even on a Bond girl, it would still be silly (although they could always bring Denise Richards back for that if they had to)
Now, a custom Crystal Chromaflair creation on the other hand though...Yes, Bond girls rule :D

This is a response to the guys who hated on the Xperia.
C'mon guys. I don't think the Xperia is that bad looking. I think its pretty cool actually. Kinda grows on you after a while. Some people like rounded corners. Some like bold edges. Sony has always come out with great designs (thus, another reason for the always high price) I think the design on this is actually nice. Touch Diamond is very nice to look at, no doubt. I am getting one when its out for sprint. But I can learn to like the Xperia.
Fun article to read by the way. Lot of high end editorial flavor and attitude. I appreciate that.

Wow! I have never seen an article or a writer on a tech blog site that generated more heat and discussion. And the writer happens to be a woman. Now that's what I call girlpower. The fact that she looks like she could be the next Bond girl doesn't hurt a bit either.
