The Jornada connector, looking at the Jornada face-on has the following pin-out:

(The ???s are because these aren't connected on the serial sync or USB sync cables. One is surely DCD but I don't know which.)

Unfortunately, the PS2 connector uses a somewhat different style of sending information to the computer than the serial port does. MicroFoundry makes an adapter (the KeyMate), but it's probably more expensive than you'd like. I've been scouring various "weird connectivity" sites to see if anybody has a direct-connect solution or a cheaper alternative adapter. So far, no luck.

Unregisterd: Unfortunately, there's a variation on the VGA connector (normally 15 pins) which uses 9 pins but has nothing in common with a serial connection other than the 9 pin connector. That's probably what's on your projector. The other possibility is that the 9-pin connector is for a mouse. With some cleaver programming, that would allow you to control the projector pointer with your Pocket PC but not to display its contents.

That said, there is a Voyager PC-Card (http://www.colorgraphic.co.uk/voyager.htm) with drivers for the iPAQ, which most PowerPoint viewers are set up to use for output. They're also working on a CF version of the card. Either would allow you to display your PocketPC screen on the projector. Another option, which saves hardware costs if there's a nearby desktop system which is hooked to the projector, is to use software like Pocket Controller (http://reviews.pocketnow.com/content.cgi?db=reviews&id=185) to display the Pocket PC screen on the desktop display.

The USB ports on PPCs are of the "slave" variety, which means that they're designed to connect to and be controlled by a "master" USB port like those on the desktop. There is, however a new standard in development by one of the USB committees (which we reported on here (http://news.pocketnow.com/detailed.cgi?db=news&id=371)) will address that problem. As soon as we get Pocket PCs with the On-The-Go USB ports, we should be able to use USB keyboards, mice, etc.

The docking connector already is a serial (RS232) and a slave USB connector. You can't actually just modify the wiring to connect a PS2 keyboard. You actually have to put some hardware inbetween the serial port and the keyboard to translate the signals.

There is one possibility for a master USB though. They do make PC-Cards that have master USB ports on them. The only problem is getting drivers for them. (The problem on the port we have is hardware. The problem on the PC-Card is software.)

I use Pocket Controller to do screen shots for my articles. It does let you use the PC keyboard for input which is fine for situations where you're near your desktop (and, in my case, if someone else isn't using it).

A PC makes a very expensive and hard to carry keyboard adapter though so, if you're "on-location," doing research in a library or taking notes in a meeting, you need something which you can connect directly to the Pocket PC.

MicroFoundry makes (made? They don't seem to be responding at their site.) an adapter that will let you plug a standard PS2 keyboard into a Pocket PC. The adapter is about half the size of the PPC though :( You could almost certainly use a "Basic Stamp" or other embedded processor to create a USB to serial converter but the cost would put that option at more than the direct-connect keyboards for the Pocket PCs. The new Casio has a USB master port on its docking cradle and on an optional PC Card and Casio is hard at work writing drivers for it. Theoretically, those drivers should work on an HP or iPAQ (as the processor is the same) with that optional PC Card installed. Casio has a history of writing things that only run on Casios, though.

The cradle connector on the iPAQ uses the following pins:

AFAIK, GCMapper is the fastest driver. The other ones use a lower priority message so you get more latency.

ce_stinger is Larry Bank's stinger driver. The driver does have a "test" screen which shows a big picture of the stinger and will put a green dot over any button you press. That will at least let you know that the Stinger is communicating properly. If so, it's just a matter of setting the buttons to fake the right keys.

David Miller's Stinger driver, at the end of this article (http://www.pocketnow.com/cgi-bin/directory/content.cgi?db=articles&id=39), also has a "test" screen and supports multiple configurations. It may be a better bet for you in the long run but either way you can still test to see if the Stinger is "talking" to the driver.

You can also test the Stinger on your desktop.
Fire up a communications program. (You'll probably have one called HyperTerminal on your system. It 's included with Windows). Set it up as follows:
> Baud rate: 1200
> Bits/Parity: 8 data bits, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit, no parity
Once it's all set up, plug the Stinger into the appropriate COM port. You should see a string of nonsense. That's the Plug and Play ID string.
Type "E5E5".
You should see another string of nonsense which is the Stinger giving it's current button/d-pad status. If you push a button or move the d-pad, it'll send another string.

It should work. I've been doing something like that with my 3835 and my half-keyboard. Just keep in mind that the serial-sync connection is a null-modem (I think the Keysync is made to work with that though.)

Those applets aren't included in the package, but they're easy to get. I use (the inappropriately named) vxHPC for my serial terminal emulation. There are a number of Ping and Telnet options. Just do a search in our Software Library and Store and you should find what you need.

Do you know of a short-ish cable to connect an iPAQ to RS232 serial port (I know the docking station has an RS232 connector but I don't want to lug that around doing fieldwork !).
Have you checked Gomadic (http://gomadic.com)? They have lots of cables and can do custom ones if they don't have exactly what you need.
