McDonalds often makes changes in the menu and venue to fit the local culture. In India, there far more vegetarian options than at the Macs in Indianapolis. In Germany, you can order a MacBeer. Now the Tokyo Macs has an offering for the perennially-connected: For around $13 per month, customers will be able to connect their lap-top or PDA via WiFi network.

McDonalds deal with SoftBank is part of a plan to eventually put WiFi access in throughout Japan. Eventually, there will even be Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol (VOIP) as part of the service.

While appealing to a lower price bracket, McDonalds is following the lead of Starbucks in the States. If it works well in Japan, perhaps the "Surf-and-Snarf" will make it to other shores as well.
