Introduction

The Palm Treo 500v is the entry level model from Palm that gives new visitors to the world of Windows Mobile the opportunity to live the all-round play and work experience without having to fork out on an expensive bells and whistles handset. The Palm website safely pegs this device as the Windows Mobile equivalent of the newly released Centro. It is aimed at grabbing a share of the demographic looking to move to away from simpler phones in favour of a more PDA / phone hybrid. So is the Treo worthy of standing on the same podium as its million plus selling little brother? Read the review to find out!

Overall Impression

Using this phone on a daily basis for a week, in place of my far more advanced TyTN II, I was surprised at how the things I missed came down in the end to simple expensive hardware add-ons. I missed my touch screen, I missed my GPS and my WiFi and I missed my jog wheel. What I didn't miss was the weight, the configuration-heavy OS, three daily alarms, front and rear cameras or the slide-out keyboard. I found the Treo 500 to be a thoroughly usable phone and although to me it was a technological step backwards from what I am used to, the question I couldn't stop coming back to was "would I spend £270 on this phone?" Well it is certainly a lot less to buy SIM free that it is on contract and it would be difficult to find another phone for the same price with more features. So I guess the answer has to be 'yes' and whilst it would be easy to make unfair hardware comparisons and claim the phone did nothing to excite me, the basic facts are: the phone is well priced, well equipped and wouldn't look out of place on any executive desk. In conclusion the answer is yes, the Treo 500 is a serious contender in the contest to offer Windows Mobile entry level smartphones.
