Introduction

The SMT5800 is Verizon Wireless' first Windows Mobile 6 Standard smartphone with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. It is manufactured by HTC and is the CDMA cousin of the S730. The SMT5800 fits very nicely in the palm of you hand, yet at 4.2 ounces delivers a lot of performance with a QUALCOMM MSM7500 400MHz processor and access to Verizon Wireless' EVDO broadband network. It is however one of the few new smartphones without WiFi. Let's see how well it performs on Verizon's network.

Picture Highlights

The power of Windows Mobile

lies in the thousands of available applications. I examine the included applications and check compatibility with some popular ones like Sling Media's SlingPlayer and Ilium Software's eWallet.

The SMT5800 keyboard's morphs this phone into an excellent email machine.

Overall Impression

Every PDA I have used as daily drivers have had touch screens, and the Verizon SMT5800 is the first Windows Mobile Standard device I am using extensively. I was initially concerned about the amount of internal memory, but its memory management has been near flawless. I have used the unit for almost two months now and I have had to force a reboot only twice. The microSD maximum capacity of 8GB provides plenty of storage for media files. I never missed not having WiFi as the Verizon EVDO broadband network met all my connectivity needs, from smooth SlingPlayer video playback to push email. The SMT5800 keyboard works well with my fat thumb and makes the device a great email work horse. It is really too bad you can't use Google Maps or Windows Live Search GPS functionality, this is a black mark on what is otherwise a splendid performer.

The bottom line: If you want a full featured small smartphone, one handed bliss out of the box, a rock solid performer and can live with a couple of deficiencies, this is a phone you should definitely consider.
